The Seamaiden’s Odyssey is available in paperback from 6 March 2025!

This is great news, and illustrator Tamsin Rosewell and I will be celebrating it at a special event in the Cartoon Museum in London, 13 March 2025, where we’ll be talking about the special collaboration between author and illustrator: Creating The Seamaiden’s Odyssey: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes.

Tamsin Rosewell and I have been working on a new book together for 18 months. The Seamaiden’s Odyssey is a coming of age story inspired by the mermaid’s pool in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Ever since I went to live in Edale in the Peak District over thirty years ago I have been fascinated by the fact that way above my cottage, on the boggy mountain plateau that is known as Kinder Scout and not far from the Kinder Downfall, there’s a stretch of water known as Mermaid’s Pool.

If you want to find it, the OS map reference is SK 0744 8867.

If you want to see the mermaid, you might have to wait a long time!

My book, which Tamsin has beautifully enhanced throughout with both full colour and black and white illustrations, tells an imagined story of how and why a seamaiden came to the pool. She is bullied by locals, attacked by a monstrous water creature, and learns the power of love. She longs for home, but has no idea how to return to the ocean.
