Paddiwak and Cosy is a best-selling rhyming picture book about two cats. Paddiwak is the prince of the household until Sally brings home Cosy. Will he ever forgive her? Will he ever be friends with the new cat? 3+

Sadly, Paddiwak and Cosy is no longer available, although you may be able to find secondhand copies on Amazon or elsewhere.

Paddiwak is a prince of a cat, a posh job, a bit of a snob…

Foreign editions

Paddiwak and Cosy was also published in the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA.

Paddiwak and Cosy is a true story about my two cats, Paddiwak and Cosy. Sally really did bring Cosy home from the cat shelter, and Cosy and Paddiwak did really run away.

I’ve been very lucky because this story has been published twice. The first time Teresa O’Brien (Methuen), illustrated it with beautiful decorative pages that absolutely glowed with colour. It went out of print for a while, then Hodder bought it and asked Alison Bartlett to illustrate it for them. It looks totally different, but just as attractive, with lovely rich colours and funny characters.

You’ll see that it’s a bit like a poem. I wonder if you could write a poem about cats. You could make it funny or sad, or it could be a kind of love story like Paddiwak and Cosy. You could ask two of your friends to illustrate it for you, and see how different their pictures are.

By the way, I later had a cat called Midnight. What colour do you think he was?
